High quality, clean water is at the top of our priority list of municipal services. We dedicate substantial time and resources to proactively ensure you have the SAFEST drinking water. The Ohio EPA has assisted in this initiative by requiring backflow prevention compliance – a requirement for all residents that the Village of Whitehouse takes seriously and professionally.
Backflow Prevention: What is it?
It is the prevention of the reverse flow of fluids and other unwanted or hazardous substances into our water supply that could cause contamination and pose potential health risks. This would typically happen at a cross connection in your plumbing system, such as in an irrigation system or a sump pump that runs off of water pressure. If backflow contaminants were to get into your water supply, it would also affect your neighbors and your community. Backflow occurs more often than you think, which is why safety protocols are in place, and sometimes backflow prevention devices are required. These devices are valves that can be installed into your plumbing system to keep contaminants out.
Backflow Prevention: Do I need it?
The Ohio EPA requires the Village of Whitehouse to conduct cross connection surveys for ALL residents to see if a backflow prevention device is necessary. But just because you complete the survey, does not mean you’ll need a device. Typically, backflow devices are required for properties with irrigation systems, water pressurized sump pumps and homes that utilize a boiler, but we will not know for certain until a survey is completed, as there are other circumstances that would require a device. Backflow Prevention: Am I in compliance?
When you schedule a cross connection survey with our staff, and a device is not required, you are in compliance. If one IS required, you will need to purchase a prevention device and have it installed by a certified professional. Backflow prevention devices also require an annual inspection by a certified professional. If your system requires a device, but you do not wish to have one, there may be options for you such as disconnecting your irrigation system (be sure to check with your HOA first if you have one) or utilizing a sump pump that does not run off of water pressure. These options can be discussed with our Public Service Department at the time of your Cross Connection Survey.
Additionally, The Village of Whitehouse partners with the company Aqua Backflow to help monitor backflow compliance. They provide additional resources such as a list of certified professionals in your area, and annual reminders for required inspections.
If you are not in compliance, you will be first contacted by Aqua Backflow, and then, if necessary, by a Village Staff Member. Continued non-compliance would result in penalties up to and including termination of service.
